One of the three local mountains of Bruck an der Mur - the Madereck with the Almgasthaus Puster, located just below the summit. An Eldorado for hikers, mountain bikers and nature lovers. Easily accessible and even walkable from the city center as a leisurely hike.

The historic old town of Bruck an der Mur is not only the starting point for a wonderful walk through the town center, but also the surrounding mountains can be easily and uncomplicatedly hiked from here.

The Madereck, one of Bruck's three local mountains (as well as the Rennfeld and the Hochanger) is considered the most popular hiking mountain, because it is easy to reach and has an inviting alpine guesthouse.

Author’s recommendation

The hike can be ideally combined with a visit to the historically unique old town of Bruck an der Mur, but also with a "climb" of the Brucker Schlossberg.

By the way - the Styria Tours App, which is available for free on Google Play and in the App Store (Android, iOS), offers detailed first-hand information: short facts (length, duration, difficulty, ascent and descent in altitude meters, ratings), map, route descriptions, altimeter, compass, summit finder, navigation along the tour. In addition, you can create your personal favorites list of favorite tours and points, save tours and destinations offline, play on social media channels and more.

With the BusBahnBim app from Verbundlinie, timetable information has never been easier: all bus, train and streetcar connections in Austria can be queried by entering locations and/or addresses, stops or important points. The app is available as a free app for smartphones (Android, iOS) - on Google Play and in the App Store.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Bruck's main square with the striking Kornmesserhaus, we first walk past the town parish church and the Kulturhaus to Kreckerstraße. Here our path branches off to the right after a few meters (yellow sign) and leads us over the Krecker and Dürrnberg to the Breitenthaler farmstead (wayside cross).

Continuing in a westerly direction along the marked path and with a beautiful view of the Mur valley and the mountains opposite (Rosseck, Mugel), we reach the Almgasthaus Puster.

Behind the inn, a path leads us across a meadow and through sparse high forest to the inconspicuous summit of the Madereck (summit cross).

Back at the Almgasthaus, after an extensive rest, we return through the Urgental valley to Bruck an der Mur. The city is reached in the area of the so-called Paulahofsiedlung, keeping left we come back to the city center.

Equipment

Proper backpacking makes many things easier: pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket. All things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top. An emergency kit including blister plaster belongs in every backpack and a clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!

Schöne Rundwanderung mit angenehmen, konstanten Aufstieg über Forststraßen und Waldwege. Beim Abstieg hat man einen wunderbaren Panoramablick auf Rennfeld, Hochkantschrauben, Röthelstein und Mugel.
