Circle route around / near Melk. Half urban, half rural.
Distance 13.2 km
The first 1/3 of this hike is urban, with a nice stroll through downtown Melk. There is a nice lunch spot near the creek at Pielachberg. Then it turns into rural farmland, with some pretty views as you go up and over the hill at about the 2/3 point. Be careful - there is no shade on this part, and it can get hot.
Before the hike started, we dropped off some scooters near Schonbuhel (with a bike lock) and scootered the rest of the way back to the car, which was great fun for the kids and made the 13km loop much more doable for little legs. You can also dip your feet in the Donau almost anywhere along this last part.
