The Skywalk via ferrata, which leads up to the mountain station on the Hunerkogel in the Dachstein region, is certainly one of the most daring via ferrata installations in the Eastern Alps. It leads almost in the fall line of the Sky Walk - a viewing platform next to the Hunerkogel mountain station - extremely exposed and spectacular directly up to the mountain station.

Opened in 2006 on the initiative of Karl Höflehner, the Skywalk via ferrata is certainly one of the most spectacular climbs in the Eastern Alps. Both for visitors to the Sky Walk platform next to the mountain station of the Dachstein glacier lift on the Hunerkogel and for the more extreme via ferrata climbers. Because anyone standing on the Sky Walk platform can see almost the entire upper part of the via ferrata through the window in the floor. The extremely exposed and difficult via ferrata leads upwards almost in the fall line of the Sky Walk platform. A total of 270 m of steel rope and about 60 step and grip bolts were used by the builders Prugger/Seebacher to create this bold via ferrata. The route itself runs along the south and south-east exposed wall of the Hunerkogel. Orientation is very easy, as for the greater part of the ascent you are literally tied to the path. The demands on strength and psyche are quite high, and there is no opportunity to take a break on the Skywalk via ferrata. It is therefore advisable to take a short webbing sling with a via ferrata carabiner with you to take some of the strain off your arms.

Turn-by-turn directions

Access:

We start at the mountain station of the Dachstein glacier cable car on the Hunerkogel at 2687m. We either take the short via ferrata (50 metres in altitude, B/C) eastwards down to the material cable car and then descend briefly to the Hunerscharte, or we cross the uppermost part of the Schladminger Glacier in an arc on foot towards the Hunerscharte (2602 m). From the Hunerscharte we descend via the Hunerschartensteig (secured, A/B) in a southerly direction to the junction with the Skywalk via ferrata (altitude of entry: 2565 m).

Route:

After the junction from the Hunertschartensteig, we turn in a north-westerly direction and embark on a long traverse (initially A, later B/C). At the end of the traverse, a very steep pillar awaits us (D). At its upper end (D/E) we reach a slab traverse (D). This leads us to a cracked wall passage (D). After this passage we struggle up an overhanging pillar (E) and reach the final wall (D) and the exit (C, B) directly next to the mountain station.

Descent:

Since we get off the via ferrata directly at the mountain station, the descent is not necessary for all those who take the train back down.
