Simony Hut
High alpine and beautiful landscape hike
This high alpine hut destination is reminding of a very special explorer of the Dachstein: The geographer Dr. Friedrich Simony (1813-96), explored, described, painted and photographed the whole massif completely. He was the first person who spent a night on the Dachstein and visited the glacier even in winter. Today, a cosy place to stay and the Dachstein Chapel await you at 2 200 m altitude - directly in front of the high Dachstein and the Hallstatt Glacier. The hiking tour in detail
The trails are steep and rocky in places, but in dry conditions there are no problems. Do not walk in fog or snow!
From Obertraun you conquer approx. 1 600 metres in altitude with the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car. You can already enjoy the beautiful karst landscape during the cable car ride.
From the cable car station Gjaid near the Gjaid Alm you walk up the way to the former Oberfeld caserne. From there follow trail No. 615 towards "Taubenkogel". At about 1 960 m altitude, a path turns off to the right and following the signpost "Simonyhütte" (Simony hut), you ascend to a hilltop with two unmissable iron poles below the "Taubenkogel".
Continue downhill through rocks to the "Untere Eissee" (ice lakes - old glacier mark on a stone). Now go right and up through the stepped eastern flank of the "Taubenriedel" into the wide basin of the upper ice lakes. Follow the way and then turn right and walk up to the Simony Hut. Marked climbing tracks lead left (east) below the rocky "Schöberl" to the western ice edge of the Hallstatt Glacier and to the "Dachstein Madonna".
The way back begins on the wide and at the beginning serpentine "Reitweg" (No. 601) - past the "Hotel Simony", a primitive walled semi-cave. From the turn-off before the "Ochsenwieshöhe", the shortest trail (No. 650) leads back to the Gjaid Alm on the right. This trail leads over a steep, rocky slope down into the "Taubenkar", then up and down between mountain pine hills to another turn-off. On the left you will reach the nearby Gjaid Alm and the cable car station Gjaid.
But it is more rewarding if you go straight on trail No. 601 to the Wiesberghaus. From there a very nice trail also leads to Gjaid Alm (No. 654). It leads you first down to the "Bärengasse". From here you climb up to a hill where trail No. 650, described above, joins in.
Hike to Hallstatt
You can also descend from the Wiesberghaus on the "classic" Dachstein trail to Hallstatt. Here you hike through forests down to the "Wiesalm" and through the "Herrengasse" to the closed "Tiergartenhütte".
The trail descends steeply before a forest road welcomes you. Maybe you make a short detour to the left to the karst source of the origin of the Waldbach. Then follow the road to the turn-off at the bridge over the "Waldbachstrub" (deep view to the waterfall). Finally turn right and follow the largely asphalted road down to Hallstatt.
