Searching for traces in the Roman Forest
Hike through the fragrant meadows and colorful forests of the southern Wechsel, with beautiful views of Vorau Abbey, Güssing Castle, nearby Burgenland and the Fischbach Alps.
The landscape around Wechsel offers views of several "worlds", as far as Slovenia, the Pannonian Plain and the foothills of the Alps. The tumuli along the hike are popularly called "Roman graves" - hence the name "Römerhütte-Römerhof" These burial sites of Roman nobles were researched by scientists from the Joanneum Graz in the 80s.
Beekeeping of family Luef is one of the highlights of our hike. Here mainly blossom honey and forest honey is produced. Propolis drops are a specialty of the beekeeper and are often given to strengthen the immune system. At special beekeeping afternoons you can learn interesting facts about the world of bees. Under Tel. 03331 / 2743 we get information about the dates.

Turn-by-turn directions
We start at the village square in St. Lorenzen. We go past the hairdresser along a sidewalk in the direction of the school. There we pass the volunteer fire department of St. Lorenzen and follow the road. After about 1 km we are at the crossroads where we turn right towards Zehenthöf. From there you can see the monastery Vorau in the distance. We follow the road again past the traditional farms and cross the Putzn' Wiesn. In the shady forest there is a bench for a short rest. Here we have to cross a small hill ridge where we finally come out at a clearing. On the left side of the meadow we reach the beekeeping Luef. We turn around again and now walk through the forest. We follow the path for about half an hour, passing a clearing and the "Tumulis" (Roman graves), which finally leads us through the Römerhütte animal park where we finally arrive at the Römerhütte inn and a fun "Roman train ride" around the animal park awaits the hikers.
At the apiary of the Luef family, mainly blossom honey and forest honey is produced. Propolis drops are a specialty of the beekeeper and are often given to strengthen the immune system. At special beekeeping afternoons you can learn interesting facts about the world of bees. You can find out the dates by calling 03331 / 2743.

Equipment
Proper backpacking makes many things easier: pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket. All things that are often needed such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map belong on top.
An emergency kit belongs in every backpack!
A clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!
A good hiking boot is a good companion and should never be missing on the mountain!
Do not forget a blister plaster just in case!
