The trail begins in Linz's market square and leads first to Ockenfels Castle. In front of the castle gates, it carries on uphill to the right and across a meadow in an arc back towards the village. Shortly afterwards, you will find yourself at the train tracks of Kasbach train station, which you can follow to Kasbach itself. The ascent to the Erpeler Ley hill begins behind the village. Next stop is the summit of the Stux, from where a path, leading to Unkel, descends into the Hähnerbach Valley.

Safety information
Health and safety- Wear suitable weatherproof clothing that will protect you from cold, wet, heat and sunshine.
- Make sure you take regular breaks and don't overexert yourself.
- Take enough fluids with you as there are sections without rest stops.
- Wear suitable hiking boots/shoes which give you enough grip on slippery, steep, rocky and uneven surfaces.
- Avoid any sections of the route which you feel are too difficult for you. Natural trails can quickly become wet and slippery in adverse weather conditions.
- Particularly in autumn, you should be careful of uneven ground, roots, stones or holes that have been covered by leaves.
- You need to take these kinds of adverse conditions into account every time you go on a hike.
- Particularly steep and dangerous places are made safer with handrails or ropes. Please use these as safety aids. Handrails are not to be climbed on or used to get a better view!

Turn-by-turn directions
An ascent brings you to an avenue which leads to the Bruchhauser Heath campsite. From there, the trail continues to the Bruchhausen cemetery and the Marienberg, a former school. From here, the Rheinsteig trail cuts down to the Breitbach Valley, where the long ascent to the 'Auge Gottes' wayside shrine (lit. 'Eye of God') begins. On the way you will pass a cross which was erected in memory of all the miners who mined and smelted ores from these hills. The forest then becomes steeper and leads first to the hidden ruins of a former V1 rocket launcher and then to the 'Auge Gottes' wayside shrine. In the past, foresters often had to contend with timber thieves, so they erected a sign with the warning 'an eye is something that sees everything, even what happens in the dead of night'. Whether the thieves took any heed of this or not has not been recorded. From the nearby junction, you walk to the rest spot at the burnt down Barbara hut, where a detour to the Leyberg mountain (45 minutes) is worthwhile. There is a magnificent view of the summit of the Drachenfels, down into the Rhine Valley and of the peaks of the Eifel region. Back at the rest spot, take the trail through the woods and down into the Mucherwiesen Valley. Here you can follow the Rheinsteig trail to the right, where you join the Rheinhöhenweg trail and follow it to Bad Honnef.
