The Birkenfelder Land was once an important center of the iron industry. This can still be guessed at today by the old Adventurer ironworks, which is passed on this wheel loop. Along the southern edge of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park, the path leads with a wonderful view of the countryside to Rinzenberg, with its pretty old farmhouses. At the Sauerbrunnen near Oberhambach, it is worth taking a short walk to the Petersquelle. A spa house once stood here, the guests drank the iron-rich water of the Sauerbrunnen, which was also sent all over the world as medicinal water.

The route leads through the picturesque Hambach valley until it finally continues via Elchweiler to Schmißberg. It is worth taking a break at the Sirona pavilion, a few hundred meters behind Schmißberg. From here it goes past the reconstructed Roman road back to Birkenfeld. Among other things, the history of the iron industry from the Celtic era to the industrial age is told in the state museum.

Author’s recommendation

The first rest is worthwhile after a few hundred meters at the ponds of the fishing facility "Fischwaid".

The start is at the State Museum in Birkenfeld. The route initially leads parallel to the RadLustschleife WasserTäume to the old adventure ironworks. From here it goes along the edge of the forest, past Buhlenberg, up to Rinzenberg with its pretty old farmhouses and cast iron fountains. Ferrous water gushes in the Sauerbrunnen near Oberhambach. It is worth taking a break here with a short walk to the nearby Petersquelle. The route leads through the picturesque valley of the Hambach, then goes uphill to the Sirona Pavilion near Schmißberg.
