On the trail of the pilgrims
Hartberg - St. Anna - Pöllauberg | Pilgrimage - following the longing
The pilgrims' path leads from Hartberg, the centre of Eastern Styria, via Neuberg and the church of St. Anna to Pöllauberg.
In 1679, the year of the plague, the parish of Hartberg vowed an annual pilgrimage to Pöllauberg. This pilgrimage is still alive today and the route leads via St. Anna, every 8th September. On the occasion of the first Hartberg pilgrimage, a votive image was erected in Pöllauberg, which has survived to this day.The Marian pilgrimage site of Pöllauberg lies in the middle of the Pöllauer Tal Nature Park. The pilgrimage church, whose founder was Katharina von Stubenberg, is one of the most magnificent High Gothic churches in all of Styria. The pilgrimage to Pöllauberg began with the veneration of an image of the Virgin Mary in the 12th century. Since then, the attraction of the place has remained unbroken. Due to its exposed location, Pöllauberg is rightly called the "sun and view terrace of Eastern Styria". You can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view over the entire eastern Styrian hill country all the way to Slovenia and far into the Hungarian lowlands.

Sturdy shoes are recommended and proper backpacking makes many things easier: Pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket. All things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top. An emergency kit including blister plasters belongs in every rucksack and it is always advisable to dress according to the "onion system"!
