The proposal is to do this tour as a bike & hike. So, we first prepare bikes above on the hike end, drive down into the Idrijca valley, do the attractive hike up and return by bikes to the car.

The hike goes only through the woods, more distant views go only across the valley, but the nearby scenery is very nice. How the railway was constructed in that difficult terrain is simply unbelievable.

Author’s recommendation

As said, prepare bikes above, on the hike end. The other option is to have two cars or to walk down by the road (or marked path).

The best time to do the hike is high summer, afternoon is better than morning (so we have at least some sunshine).

The second option is to hike also the upper part of the field railway. The railway connected Idrija town with Godovič town, above on the plateau. So, from the Ključi locality you can continue southwards and later southeastwards by the ex railway route and by todays forest roads. From Godovič, you can return down to Idrija by bus, or you can even plan to have bikes up there. But that makes the hike much longer and also the upper part is less interesting.

In addition, it's very worth adding to this tour also: Divje jezero (lake), Idrijca river and its barriers (klavže / klausen), Idrija town and its quick silver museum.

Safety information

Take care on exposed sections! The most demanding details are secured (cables, pegs, ladder), but still require a safe step. On the Swiss Hiking Scale the grading would be T3.

Also rock fall can be dangerous on some places.

Tips and hints

History: The narrow gauge railway was in hurry (supposedly only in 2 months) built in September 1916, when the Isonzo frontline supply was in jeopardy. From big warehouses in Logatec the supplies went to Godovič, where the railway branched. One branch went high on the Trnovski gozd (plateau), the other branch (our Feldbahn is part of it) wend down in the Idrija town and further towards Most na Soči. From Idrija to Godovič the train needed 3 hours (that's also what we need to come up on foot).

Small parking lot (3 places) near the Idrijca river. From the bigger parking lot at Divje jezero, it's the 3rd small parking lot up the valley. (383 m)

Forest road at the "Ključi" locality. It's just above the series of wild turns, connecting this locality with the main valley below. the

Turn-by-turn directions

On a beech tree, opposite of the parking lot, there's the "Feldbahn" inscription, and also a sign of the trail can be seen. The comfortable trail gains altitude very gently, so at first it goes just a few meters above the road. On one place due to a landslide the trail is intermitted, there a steel cable and pegs help us to get across. The we hike up into the wilderness again.

Suddenly on the trail there's a big U-turn. There on the railway once it was an arrangement station. So, the trail changes direction completely, continuing to ascend gently. Soon the slopes get very steep, the trail goes below crags, where rock walls are even higher, it finds narrow ledges to come across. On a few places it's really exposed, but comfortable all the time. Then comes the key passage.

On a vertical crag the railway route is completely disconnected (there must had been once a bridge). So, the trail descends steeply a few meters, detours the rocks and finally by a 10 m tall ladder we climb up again and reach the railway route again. There immediately a tunnel follows, bringing us through another rock.

After the tunnel the terrain becomes less and less wild. A few more ledges and rock crags, then it goes only ecross steep, forested slopes. Finally, it reaches a forest road, by which we continue to the "Ključi" crossroads.

Remark: Orientation on the trail, even if it's not marked, is simple. But take care, because two marked paths are crossing the Feldbahn. They are going from the road directly up the slope, crossing the railway route two times and continuing up on the mountain. Don't follow the red marks!

Public transport

Idrija town has a regular bus connection.

Getting there

Yo best come by own car. South of Idrija town you deter from the main road towards the SW, into the Idrijca river valley.

Free parking place just at the trail head.

It's unbelievable where did they construct this railway. Not much views around, but nice nearby scenery.
