This hike convinces with a natural diversity: mountain lakes on the sunny plateau of the Tauplitzalm, softly swinging alpine pastures, rushing torrents, colorful forests, deep gorges, rustic huts for refreshments and several walking options - all together: very impressive!

Author’s recommendation

The tour is basically easy, but due to the length of about 8 hours it can be exhausting. Take good care of your strength!

Destination

Mountain station 4-seater chairlift Tauplitzalm or parking lot at Tauplitzalm

Turn-by-turn directions

Start from the mountain station of the 4-seater chairlift or from the parking lot on the Tauplitzalm in an easterly direction to the Steirersee.

A detour to the Steirerseebankerl with a great view of the legendary Sturzhahn, which was first climbed by mountaineering icon Heinrich Harrer, is recommended.

Afterwards you come along the Steirersee to the Schwarzensee. Behind the Schwarzensee, the high-altitude hike now begins via the Leistalm and a low mountain peak to the plateau behind it. (surefootedness required!)

Now you walk over the Kampboden to the turnoff on the Almkogel. The path now becomes steeper - it takes about 1.5 hours to reach the 2,116 m high summit, which is reached via the southern slope. Behind the summit cross it goes down properly and the view is very impressive!

Back to the starting point is via the same route.

Those who wish can also continue the tour to the Gnanitzalm.

Equipment

Proper backpacking makes many things easier: pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket. All things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top. An emergency kit including blister plaster belongs in every backpack and a clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!
