2 million years ago, when mankind was just emerging in eastern Africa, a vast plain dominated the landscape of southeastern Styria. The subtropical sea, the remnant of a primeval ocean that once stretched from Spain to China, had already been pushed back into the Pannonian basin.
During this time, more than 40 volcanoes erupted in the thermal and volcanic land. For a long time the region was characterized by fire, ash and smoke. The Kapfenstein volcano is one of these volcanoes. It was formed by numerous eruptions, when the rising magma came into contact with the groundwater and volcanic ash was thrown kilometers into the air by violent steam explosions. Along this hiking trail, you will learn everything worth knowing about the formation of southeastern Styria with its volcanic landscape.
The municipality of Kapfenstein offers Geo-Trail guided tours! Geo-Info Kapfenstein in the municipal office. Information under 03157 2235 (municipality Kapfenstein).
Tips when reporting an emergency – Answer these six WH questions: What happened? How many people are injured? Where did the accident happen (are there GPS coordinates)? Who is reporting the incident (callback number)? When did the accident happen? What is the weather like at the site of the incident?
The Kapfenstein Geo-Trail - the path through the volcano - leads through the layers of the Kapfenstein volcano, witnesses of a fiery past. On the 2 km long path through the volcano, we dive into a world of fire and smoke. A spectacular chapter of the earth's history can be experienced up close.
At 11 stations, the formation of the volcano and its surroundings is explained. Through 3 special telescopes you can even take a look into the past. An old network of trails and paths is made accessible to the public again through the Geo-Trail. The trails not only allow visitors to walk through the volcano, but also lead them through a beautiful landscape of the volcano.
The starting point of the Geo-Trail is at the Winkler-Hermaden winery, from there we walk in the direction of the church, where there is a station where we can look back into the past. Past the church we walk along the volcanic cone into the mixed forest. Here we will find several stations that will give us an understanding of the history of the volcano's origin. After about half the distance you will reach the Sacred Heart Chapel, near it there are more stations and "glimpses into the past". Along the green meadows we hike the volcanic cone and soon reach Kapfenstein Castle and thus also the starting point of the hike.

Proper backpack packing makes many things easier: Pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within reach in a side pocket. All the things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top. An emergency kit, including blister plasters, belongs in every rucksack and it is always advisable to dress in layers.
Wir empfehlen eine Trage zu verwenden. An einigen Stellen ist der Weg (kleiner Pfad) sehr schmal, hängend und uneben/stufig. Daher ist der Geotrail nicht Kinderwagentauglich.
