Highest point468 m
Lowest point291 m
The hike is perfect to get to know the southwest of Fehring. With the starting point at the Kuruzzenschenke you have a nice start and especially after the hike you can fully enjoy the culinary delights with a beautiful view in the guest garden. During the tour, you should take time for Kapfenstein Castle and the informative geo trail, which is all about the history of the earth. Kapfenstein Castle, a fortified castle dating back to the 11th century, is now run as a hotel and restaurant. If you would like to have a picnic, you have the possibility to order a picnic basket at Kapfenstein Castle and enjoy regional food and drinks in the middle of the nearby vineyard. Finally, an informative note for long-distance hikers: here you are partly on the northern route of the Styrian long-distance hiking trail "From Glacier to Wine".
If you prefer a shorter hike, you can "only" do a distance hike from the Kuruzzenschenke to Kapfenstein Castle.
We start at the Konrad wine farm or the Kuruzzenschenke and orient ourselves by the yellow signposts in the direction of Kapfenstein. Slightly uphill we follow the path, which partly also leads parallel to the Kreuzweg on the Kuruzzenkogel. The hiking trail passes under the summit of the Kuruzzenkogel, whereby we can always follow the trail marking 07 or "On the tracks of the volcanoes - enjoyment tour". After coming out of the forest, we walk along side roads, past a few houses and vineyards, until we come to the village sign Gutendorf - Kapfenstein municipality. Here we continue along the road for a bit until we reach a wooden signpost with numerous directional arrows. We pass this junction again on the way back. Now we immediately turn right into the forest, along the Wilma Kellner path and continue on an asphalt road until we turn right into a forest road. We stay on the forest road until we reach the access road to the castle and follow it uphill to Kapfenstein Castle. In front of the entrance to the castle, at a small self-service hut, we go down the steps to the right. Then we turn right and we are already at the Geo-Trail, which is equipped with several stations or display boards. Towards the end, the trail leads through the vineyard, past a rest area and along the edge of the forest. Just before the gate, we take the trail downhill to the left and come to the road we already know. We go back the same way to the junction and now turn right towards Kreuzgraben. We pass by the Wagner show garden, always following the road. After going slightly downhill, we come to a crossroads and keep left. Continue along the road until you pass the Breitfellner Chapel and immediately turn left in the direction of Fehring. We now follow the road continuously downhill and reach the wide valley floor. In succession we go slightly uphill until we see the fork on the left. Now we walk through the populated area or the agricultural areas of Fehring. For orientation we also use the signposts of the running and walking route Fehring. We pass the country house "FühlDichWohl" and continue to follow the road uphill. There is the possibility to continue through the forest and the old quarry - also known as Fehringer Vulkanarena. Once back at the road, we follow it to our starting point.
