With the exception of the first 5 km from Altenglan to Kusel, the Fritz Wunderlich Cycle Route, which is named after the acclaimed singer who was born in Kusel, runs along a disused railway line, crossing two lofty viaducts and passing through two tunnels. The paths are predominantly surfaced with crushed brick/stone, while the dense woodland and thicket that surround the tracks for most of the way lend the route a tranquil, unspoilt character.
Distance 26.2 km
The 26 km Fritz Wunderlich Cycle Route begins at Altenglan train station. It passes through Rammelsbach en route to the district capital of Kusel, where it joins a disused railway line and continues to Freisen in Saarland. Gently ascending, and completely off-road from Kusel onwards, the Fritz Wunderlich Cycle Route is the perfect way to explore the North Palatine Uplands. Lichtenberg Castle is reached via the circular trail around the castle which features moderate inclines, or by a steep climb up the country road in Thallichtenberg. In Thallichtenberg, the Rhineland-Palatinate Cycle Route also branches off towards Baumholder and the Castle Cycle Route. The route features a large number of bridges and also a tunnel. Another highlight is the impressive bridge in Oberkirchen, which spans the town and valley. And the Fritz Wunderlich Cycle Trail has yet another treat in store – there are no intersections with other traffic routes between Kusel and Pfeffelbach, so the trail is very safe for families and is also an amazing way to explore the natural world.
Auch wenn es mit Steigungen verbunden ist - der Abstecher zur Burg Lichtenberg ist auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen!
