Cherry Blossom Trail

Enjoy lovely panoramic views of Lake Neusiedl, far into the Hungarian Plains. Passing vineyards, rough pastures and thousands of cherry trees which – depending on the weather – transform the region into a sea of blossom and bloom from early to mid-April, the trail takes you through a string of picturesque villages. Together with the cherry blossoms, which have lent the region its name, you will discover yellow Adonis flowers (pheasant’s eye), dark violet pasque flowers, pink and white delphiniums, lilac grape hyacinths, as well as yellow and violet tiny irises, which all turn the dry grassland on the southern slopes of the Leitha mountains into a sea of blossom. Given the usually flat topography, this trail is somewhat more demanding with short, steep ascents.

A series of display boards tell cyclists more about the cultural and natural specificities of the region.

Cherry splendour all around! Thousands of cherry trees on the foot of the Leitha mountains carry their ripe fruits in June. Why not stop at one of five cherry orchards that provide information on different cherry varieties. More than 40 different products made from the small red fruits are on sale at local delis and inns.

If you are cycling for pleasure, why not put in a culinary stop at one of the many inns and wine taverns in the region which offer delicious regional specialties and exquisite Leithaberg wines according to the season. On the menu of the inns and restaurants in the region, you will find traditional sweet dishes such as cherry cake, cherry pancakes or cherry strudel alongside more innovative creations such a cherries wrapped in prosciutto, feta on a cherry-strawberry-tomato salsa, or breast of duck with cherry-thyme vinaigrette. If you prefer to create your own delicacies, whole baskets packed with cherries are on sale at every corner.

In autumn, when the grapes are ripe, you can watch winemakers at work. The programme of events in the Lake Neusiedl-Leithagebirge nature reserve, a world heritage site, then features guided wine tours and tastings.
