A path that leads mostly along the southern slope of Monte della Piana and then passes around it on the east side reaching the Piana pass, a large grassy saddle lying between the mountain of the same name and the small sloping hilly meadows of the monte del Larice

The most evocative of the new nature trails laid out in the area and making accessible areas once only frequented by local hunters. Solitary, sunny, varied and, except for a short stretch, not tiring. From the silence of the forest, broken only by the gurgling waters of the rio Puiche, suddenly you will find yourself on a beautiful panoramic terrace overlooking the entire Valle del Sole and the mountains that surround it the south. And there's more. A little further on is an unusual, flat secluded little valley, the undisputed kingdom of the marmots, which precedes the pass itself where there is a table with benches and particularly beautiful views towards the Olbe plateau, monte Ferro, on the Righile pinnacles, Chiadènis and even the distant Antelao.

This hike can be considered in itself a destination for the uniqueness of the environments that it crosses, but can also be a starting point for other excursions including monte della Piana from the east (see itinerary n. 22), rifugio 2000 (see below) and the lakes of Olbe (see itinerary n. 25 in the Walking section).

Turn-by-turn directions

Follow itinerary n. 21 until it forks. Here, ignore the path n. 140 to the left towards the rifugio 2000, continuing along the track that at the start is almost level and that continues straight and then leads slightly downhill to the rio Puiche and crossing it before climbing the steep wooded ridge that lies ahead once again on steep turns. At its summit is the splendid balcony mentioned above (with a protective fence and bench, partly ruined by an avalanche), an excellent lookout and ideal stopping point. Continuing from here, initially up a slight slope through sparse woodland, then, with some ups and downs, north-eastwards, passing almost under the monte della Piana with some rather exposed stretches as far as a curious and completely flat little valley. Passing on through it, keeping to the left, west, (be careful here because on this stretch the yellow signs are non-existent) to the Piana pass where there is a roughly-made table with bench and, a short distance away, a sign on a pole marked " Sentiero naturalistico monte della Piana ".

Return

The return to the valley can be done along the route used for the ascent. However, the following route is more recommended. From the pass continue to the left (westwards) along the obvious track that soon leads to the ski run. From here follow it uphill to the rifugio 2000 (a climb of c. 50 metres) and return from it using itinerary n. 21 in reverse to the Piani di Gront, from where, either along the ski slope or deviating from this towards Miravalle and from there using itinerary n. 13 (in the Walking section) in reverse to the Sappada district of Mühlbach, employing 1:45-2:00 hours.
