These relics of the Great War stand on steep, grassy slopes that lie to the left of the scree of the south wall of Chiadenis. These bastions, in ruins until a dozen years ago, were brought partially back to their original condition on the initiative of the Veneto Region.

This is a special route, being of a mostly historical nature, but can prove to be very engaging if the ruins are visited in the right state of mind. The first of the two forts, with a very complex structure, was in all probability a logistics base for our soldiers on the front line, very close by.In observing the slits, the walls and the metal stakes, it is hard not to think of those dramatic pages of our history and, perhaps, feel like one of those Alpine troops struggling with all the hardships demanded by the terrible situation.Even on holiday, history should not be ignored. The other fort, given the position, probably had a strategic function. In addition to these particular aspects, the walk is very pleasant of itself because of the lovely setting. There are also two large information boards.Beware of inadvertently touching the stones of the fort:vipers love rocky and sunny places like this!

Turn-by-turn directions

Route A

From Cima Sappada, take provincial road no. 22 for 8 kilometres to the large car park at the fork for the Calvi shelter.Follow the white cart track to the shelter until the first hairpin bend, where a sign with the phrase “fortini del monte Chiadenis” marks a turning to the right (east) along an almost level path that soon reaches the first fort, then continues along a peaceful and pleasurable route to the second, where the large information boards are to be found.

 Route B

From Cima Sappada, continue along provincial road no.22 for 7 kilometres to the obvious fork on the right with signs for the dairy of Casa Vecchia.Leave the car here and continue along the white cart road towards the Avanza pass. Before reaching it, at a large, typical horseshoe bend, climb straight up towards the north for around fifty metres through meadows, aiming for two large boulders (there is a rather faded white and red trail mark on the second). Here, the path crosses a wide mule track that slowly traverses the slope along the level ground of a sparse wood. After a sharp turn, it begins to climb but it is left a little further on, next to a large board with information about the Great War, where, on the left, a wide path leads to the first fort and then the second.

The return can be made either by the same route or a variation.
