The refuge is a great point for panoramas. Closed only to the north by the rocky ridge of monte Righile / monte Lastroni, your gaze will be cast across an uninterrupted sequence of peaks and valleys, from the abyssal view of the valley of Sappada to the enchanting landscapes of the Coglians, pushing on to the Terze, and the distant Julian Alps and Pre-alps.

This suggestion that, overall, at times is a little 'tiring, but solitary and sunny in the various environments that it crosses. The view of Sappada and the crags that surround it to the south is almost constant. It is recommended for those who wish to come to the refuge by traditional means, that is, trudging up through nature, possibly using the oh-so-comfortable and fast lifts only up to the Piani di Gront, but that will never be an integral part of the environment.

Turn-by-turn directions

Itinerary A

From the arrival station of the 1st section of the Sappada 2000 chairlift at the Piani di Gront, a sign on the left that says “laghi d'Olbe” indicates the beginning of a track that crosses the ridge above eastward toward the woods. At a fork (signed) continue left, then climbing with regular turns up to its upper edge. At the last larch trees the trail passes close to a recently built log cabin (with comfortable bench ideal for relaxing and getting a tan at high altitude) and then rises up through a steep grassy valley, finally passing through a series of grassy humps to the refuge.

Itinerary B

From the Sappada district of Mühlbach use itinerary n. 13 (in the Walking section) as far as Miravalle. From here follow the obvious path (signed) pointing north running almost parallel to the chairlift that then goes left into the woods until it meets a ski track, then follow this right to Piani di Gront. From here the to the refuge is the same as itinerary A.

Return

From the refuge the return can be done using the same route. For those wishing to return to the valley by a different and interesting route, the alternative is as follows. From the refuge follow itinerary n. 25 (in the Walking section) to the second junction. Leave the left path that leads to the lakes of Olbe and continue along the wide track that leads to the Piana pass (with a bench and table) and at the table placed on a pole indicating the “Sentiero naturalistico monte della Piana") continue south using itinerary 24 in the opposite direction as far as the Piani di Gront, from where, either along the ski slope or deviating from this towards Miravalle and from there using itinerary n. 13 (in the Walking section) in reverse to the Sappada township of Mühlbach requiring a total of 1:45-2:00 hours.

There is also the opportunity to go down along the ski slope to the Gosse refuge (the uphill station of the 2nd section of the chairlift, closed in the summer season), from where, using itinerary n. 25 in reverse you reach Sappada in 2.00-2.15 hours.
