A broad, green saddle overlooking the val Pesarina lying between the complex structure of the Cresta di Enghe to the west and the Creta Brusàde, the last rocky outliers of the Clap group to the east, this route is a “classic” of the area and can represent a trip for its own sake as a section of the ring Cresta di Enghe, but in any case the pass is worth a visit for the wide variety of environments.

A quiet and sunny route characterized by a long stretch on a slight slope, initially through the silent valley of the Rio Storto and then the Rio Enghe, and a second part with the peculiarities of mountain hiking trails (a path that climbs up steep rocky ramparts, larch woods and debris-filled gullies). Just before the meeting-point with the Cadin di Elbel, quite suddenly you come across a picturesque waterfall, great for cooling off and to get your fill of its pure water. From the pass there are beautiful views to the north and the Rinaldo group and the green crest that marks the international border.

Warning : in the presence of strong rain-showers or thunderstorms the apparently harmless, quiet trickle of the waterfall turns into a massive thundering flood, dire circumstances for those passing at that moment. This is a danger not to be underestimated, especially for those with little experience, so choose a day with certain decent weather!

Turn-by-turn directions

Itinerary 2 leads the walker up to the fork at 1434 m (see tables) where you take the track to the left that crosses the Rio Enghe and points decisively towards the looming, repellent cliff. An exposed and quite steep path deals with this section (there is a short stretch subject to landslides, buttressed with tree-trunks, that requires some caution) as far as the original waterfall that falls right onto it, thus creating two pools of emerald-green water. A series of hairpins amidst sparse woodland give way to the beginning of the valley that leads to the pass, still quite a distance but now visible. At a fork at 1750m, ignore the path that rises to Cadin di Elbel and the Hoberdeirer saddle to left, and continue south up a modest slope towards the smiling saddle.
