The accessibility of alpine passes in the Schladminger Tauern range is delayed this year due to the snowy winter and the unusually cold month of May, which was also heavy in precipitation. In altitudes up from 1,700 meters above sea-level there are still large snowfields - especially in shady areas. In altitudes up from 2,100 meters the snow cover is fully intact in large areas and only in parts the trails become free of snow - exceptions are slopes and passages that are exposed to the sun most of the day.
The following list gives a short overview about trails in the Schladminger Tauern range that are still covered in snow for the largest part:
- 1. stage | trail Hochwurzen to Giglachseen Lakes:
trail # 773 from Hochfeld summit to Giglachseen Lakes largely covered in snow
- 2. stage | Giglachseen Lakes to Keinprechthütte:
section via Rotmandlspitze between Vetternkar cirque to about 150 m (in altitude) above Keinprechthütte largely covered in snow, as well as the alternative route via Duisitzkarsee Lake, where trail # 775 to Murspitzsattel also still has large snowfields on the trail passages crossing the steep slopes.
- 3. stage | Keinprechthütte to Gollinghütte:
the ascent to Trockenbrotscharte has larger snowfields in the steep chutes along the slopes. Also the area from Göriachwinkel cirque up to Gollingscharte ridge and back down to Gollingwinkel cirque is widely covered in snow.
- 4. stage | Klafferkessel:
there are smaller snowfields on the ascent to Greifenbergsattel ridge. The section from Greifenberg over the lake plateau of the Klafferkessel into the Obere Lämmerkar cirque is mostly under full snow cover.
- 5. stage (5-day tour) | Planai High Trail:
snowfields of residual snow in the steep chutes along Höfert-Steig and larger snowfields especially in the trail "Kaltenbach".
- 5. stage (7-day tour) | Preintalerhütte - Breitlahnhütte:
from Trattenkar cirque via Trattenscharte ridge and the Goldlacken plateau the snow cover is virtually fully intact.
- 6. and 7. stage (7-day tour) | Breitlahnhütte to St. Nikolai im Sölktal:
larger snowfields in altitudes from about 1,800 meters, partially full snow cover intact - especially in the areas of the mountain passes Rantentörl, Hubenbauertörl and Schimpelscharte ridges.
