Leaving Warnford, head south on the Monarch's Way to return to the South Downs Way. Back on the path you quickly ascend Old Winchester Hill where the remains of an impressive Iron Age hill fort can be seen. From here, you can see in all directions, including over the Isle of Wight, explaining the forts strategic military position. Next, you come to Buster Hill, whose summit is a small detour off the trail. The summit is the highest point on the walk at 270m above sea level. Enjoy wonderful views across to South Downs and over the Channel. Shortly after, walk through the woodlands of Queen Elizabeth Country Park. Now you are the on the high ridge and the next few miles are through more woodland, offering shade and protection until you reach the turn for South Harting.

South Harting is a village just off of the SDW. Please note that the main road leading into the village does not have a footpath therefore we recommend following the the route through woodland as described in these notes. The Church of St. Mary & St Gabriel is notable for its imposing statue of the Archangel Gabriel by sculptor Philip Jackson. You'll also find the village stocks still standing just outside the church. There is a good village shop which is also a post office. The White Hart is the only pub in the village, consider reserving your evening meal in advance.

Be sure to make the small detours to the summits of Winchester and Buster Hill, particularly on a nice clear day.

Sicherheitshinweise

The South Downs Way occassionally crosses busy roads, take care when crossing!

Maps

If you wish to carry a hardcopy map, we would recommend buying the South Downs Way map published by Harvey's Maps. Alternatively, you may wish to print the daily maps directly from our app.

Guidebook

If you wish to bring a guidebook, we would recommend Trailblazer's South Downs Way by Jim Manthorpe & Daniel McCrohan.

Food & Drink

Since there are no shops in Exton, ask your accommodation upon check-in if they offer packed lunches. Although you will be walking through towns and villages, café opening hours are not always guaranteed, therefore we recommend taking enough food and drink to see you through until your next overnight location.

Wegbeschreibung

*** To help you follow the route with confidence we provide these route notes to help you. The South Downs Way is well waymarked, but we strongly suggest that you follow the GPS tracks in the Macs Adventure smartphone app to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and problem-free day.  The daily maps can also be printed from the web version of the app should you wish to take paper copies with you. ***

Head south out of Warnford on the Monarch's Way to return to the South Downs Way. Continue on dry chalk stream beds between trees and alongside fields. Reach the foot of Old Winchester Hill. The GPS tracks bypass the hill, but if you wish to climb the hill (recommended, especially in good weather!), continue straight ahead.

At approx. 5 km, the trail meets a road, which will be on your right hand side, and the Old Winchester Nature Reserve on your left. Soon after, the road forks. At the fork, take a sharp right through a gate, leaving the road behind and descending through fields. Follow the trail to Meon Springs, a fly-fishing base where you can pick up refreshments. Leaving Meon Springs behind, continue following the SDW, crossing the bridge over Whitewool Pond.

Continue following the obvious path which alternates between tarmac and stony trails alongside trees, fields and with views to the sea and the Meon Valley.

At approx. 11.5km, the way takes a sharp left turn at Wetherdown hostel. Continue past Hyden and Tegdown hills which you will pass on your left-hand side. Soon after, arrive at the foot of Buster Hill. A short detour to the summit is highly recommended as this is the highest point of the entire walk at 270m. For more information about Buster Hill, please click on the interactive icon on the digital map.

Once you have finished exploring Buster Hill. Continue on the trail as it heads south, eventually coming to the busy A3 dual carriageway. The trail cuts under the A3, and you'll soon be away from the rush of traffic as the trail continues into the Queen Elizabeth Country Park, a protected area of ancient forest. As you come out of the forest, with the car park on your left, continue on the trail as it turns right. On your left are the Buriton Chalk Pits, former chalk quarrying sites that are now nature reserves.

At approx. 23.5 km you will come to Sunwood Farm. If you are staying at Copper Beaches, leave the SDW here. Continue straight ahead instead of turning right for the SDW and South Harting. Continue down the tarmac road until you come to the B2146 (about ½ mile), turn right, Copper Beeches is the next property on your left. If you are staying elsewhere continue on the SDW.

At approx. 26km, turn left, leaving the SDW way and joining a trail through woodland heading north, and running parallel to the B2146, to reach South Harting. Please see your accommodation details for information about where you are staying tonight in South Harting.

Ausrüstung

Such is the way of British hiking, that you need to be prepared for all seasons and weathers; sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required, as is plenty of sun-cream and a healthy respect for the sun.

Walking poles may be helpful on some of the ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.
