Leaving Warnford, back on the path you quickly ascend Old Winchester Hill where the remains of an impressive Iron Age hill fort can be seen. From here, you can see in all directions, including over the Isle of Wight, explaining the forts strategic military position. Next, you come to Buster Hill, whose summit is a small detour off the trail. The summit is the highest point on the walk at 270m above sea level. Enjoy wonderful views across to South Downs and over the Channel. Shortly after, walk through the woodlands of Queen Elizabeth Country Park before arriving at the village of Buriton.

Buriton has a fantastic location at the foot of the wooded escarpment that you walk through later in the day. It has a population of about 750.The Church of St. Mary is notable for its interior which dates back to the 12th century and features carvings of water lillies, foliage and scallops. Buriton has two pubs serving food and no shops.

Be sure to make the small detours to the summits of Winchester and Buster Hill, particularly on a nice clear day.

The South Downs Way occassionally crosses busy roads, take care when crossing!

If you wish to carry a hardcopy map, we would recommend buying the South Downs Way map published by Harvey's Maps. Alternatively, you may wish to print the daily maps directly from our app.

If you wish to bring a guidebook, we would recommend Trailblazer's South Downs Way by Jim Manthorpe & Daniel McCrohan.

Food & Drink

Since there are no shops in Exton, ask your accommodation upon check-in if they offer packed lunches. Although you will be walking through towns and villages, café opening hours are not always guaranteed, therefore we recommend taking enough food and drink to see you through until your next overnight location.

*** To help you follow the route with confidence we provide these route notes to help you. The South Downs Way is well waymarked, but we strongly suggest that you follow the GPS tracks in the Macs Adventure smartphone app to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and problem-free day.  The daily maps can also be printed from the web version of the app should you wish to take paper copies with you. ***

Head south from Warnford on the Monarch's Way to return to the South Downs Way and continue on dry chalk stream beds between trees and alongside fields. Reach the foot of Old Winchester Hill. The GPS tracks bypass the hill, but if you wish to climb the hill (recommended, especially in good weather!), continue straight ahead.

At approx. 5 km, the trail meets a road, which will be on your right hand side, and the Old Winchester Nature Reserve on your left. Soon after, the road forks. At the fork, take a sharp right through a gate, leaving the road behind and descending through fields. Follow the trail to Meon Springs, a fly-fishing base where you can pick up refreshments. Leaving Meon Springs behind, continue following the SDW, crossing the bridge over Whitewool Pond.

Continue following the obvious path which alternates between tarmac and stony trails alongside trees, fields and with views to the sea and the Meon Valley.

At approx. 11.5km, the way takes a sharp left turn at Wetherdown hostel. Continue past Hyden and Tegdown hills which you will pass on your left-hand side. Soon after, arrive at the foot of Buster Hill. A short detour to the summit is highly recommended as this is the highest point of the entire walk at 270m. For more information about Buster Hill, please click on the interactive icon on the digital map.

Once you have finished exploring Buster Hill. Continue on the trail as it heads south, eventually coming to the busy A3 dual carriageway. The trail cuts under the A3, and you'll soon be away from the rush of traffic as the trail continues into the Queen Elizabeth Country Park, a protected area of ancient forest. As you come out of the forest, Buriton is a mere 0.5km away. Another lovely town, it benefits from a great location at the foot of the Buster Hill escarpment. Please check your individual accommodation details for information about where in Buriton you are staying tonight.

Anreise mit der Bahn, dem Auto, zu Fuß oder mit dem Rad

Such is the way of British hiking, that you need to be prepared for all seasons and weathers; sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required, as is plenty of sun-cream and a healthy respect for the sun.

Walking poles may be helpful on some of the ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.
