Walking on lava fields: Leirhnjúkur Short Trail

An amazing and surreal, relatively little known short walk on a lavafield with red riolithe mountains, white ice fields, and green grass everywhere. Meanwhile amazing volcanic mountains in the background. An easy trail leads from the parking area around the active area of Leirhnjúkur. Walk through hot spring area and steaming lava to craters formed in the Krafla fires 1975-1984. A hiking trail leads from the hot spring area to the crater Hófur, which is north of Leirhnjúkur. Hófur is a beautiful formed crater dating back to the Mývatn fires, 1725-1729 Completed: 29 July 2020
