This physically demanding stretch is another opportunity to enjoy a 360° view from Kitzbüheler Horn. The summit is at an altitude of almost 2000 m. There are multiple routes back down the mountain.

Initially, you will follow uphill woodland paths. You’ll then cross the ski pistes, which bloom with a colourful display of wild flowers, and pass the Alpine flower garden on your way to the summit. The path is steep in places, but well-maintained and accessible. After enjoying the views over lunch at Kitzbüheler Horn, you have two options for your onward journey to the Harschbichlbahn cable car station. Alternatively, you can continue to follow the KAT walk signs until you reach St. Johann.

Enjoy lunch at the Kitzbühel summit restaurant and enjoy views of the surrounding hills from their panoramic terrace.

Today you may be walking past a few different areas where cows graze. Although generally very docile and used to walkers, keep your distance and never turn your back on a cow that is behaving strangely or aggressive. Be particularly vigilant around cows with calves.

A number of sections of this walk pass through fields containing livestock. Always look out for animals when entering a field. Keep your distance from the animals and remember to close gates after you.

Today’s walk is very easy-going; there are no tricky sections to navigate and no dizzying heights to worry about.

Always allow plenty of time for your hike. The specified walking times only refer to actual time spent walking. Breaks for photos and a rest need to be added to the specified times.

Make sure you find out about current weather conditions and keep an eye on weather changes. Thunderstorms can gather very quickly in the Alps.

Do not leave the designated hiking trails!

Harschbichlbahn Cable Car

0.00 km – With the station building (Kitzbühel) behind you, TURN LEFT and follow the paved road that runs parallel to the track for approx. 600 m.

0.60 km – At the railway crossing, TURN LEFT and cross the tracks. From here, follow the signs towards Hagstein/Adlerhütte (route 31A).

3.50 km – You will reach Adlerhütte Lodge. From here, follow the signs towards Kitzbüheler Horn/Mittelstation (route 34).

3.7 km – At the fork, TURN RIGHT onto the narrow stony forest path. Follow this path for approx. 100 m and TURN LEFT at the next fork onto the gravel road.

4.4 km – You have two options here: You can take the left path, which leads STRAIGHT ON up the mountain via the ski piste. Alternatively, you can take the middle path, which snakes upwards. The routes cross at two points.

8.5 km – You have reached Kitzbüheler Horn. The climb to the summit restaurant is well worth the effort; if the weather is good, you can sit outside and enjoy lunch on the panoramic terrace. Take a break to regain your strength before descending to St. Johann.

8.5 km – You have two options for the descent: You can follow the signs towards St. Johann, which take you to the Harschbichlalm cable car station via a steep path (with wire ropes) that starts near the summit and passes by the mountain.

If this descent is too steep, you can also opt to TURN RIGHT onto the gravel path directly in front of the summit restaurant. You will then reach a narrow path, which descends down to the cable car station a little more gently.

Further instructions for the second option:

9.7 km – At the sign, TURN LEFT towards the Horn-Gipfel-Höhenweg (mountain summit trail).

12.6 km – You have reached your destination for today: The Harschbichlbahn cable car station. Take the cable car down to St. Johann. Alternatively, you can follow the signs down towards St. Johann (approximately 1.5 hour walk). BEWARE: the last departure is 16.30.

After travelling into the valley on the Harschbichlbahn cable car, with the valley station behind you, TURN LEFT, with the piste map on your left and the cashier’s huts on your right. After a few metres, TURN RIGHT into Hornweg and follow this road for around 400 m. When you reach Restaurant Max, TURN RIGHT onto the small gravel path and follow it for 100 m. When you reach the pedestrian crossing, cross the road and TURN RIGHT into Speckbacherstraße. Hotel Post is approximately 400 m down the road. If you are staying in another hotel, please follow the directions on your accommodation sheet.

As you’ll be climbing and descending at significant heights, we recommend the use of trekking poles, particularly during your descent from Kitzbüheler Horn.

The weather can change rapidly in the mountains, so always carry waterproofs with you. Don’t forget that your exposure to sunlight increases and the temperature decreases as you climb to higher altitudes.
