Southwark, south of the original London Bridge and home to Borough Market, has a long history dating back to Roman times. Before the seventeenth century Puritan purges, and despite the land being owned by the Bishop of Winchester, it was a thriving red light district, illegally until 1611, when brothels were licensed by Royal decree.
Thanks to the coming of the railway and the recent gentrification of the riverside, Southwark’s character has changed considerably.
There are some interesting pub buildings to savour and a treat too for beer lovers. In addition to Harveys’ only London tied house, there are two genuine free houses both with a very good range of beers from microbreweries, relatively rare in London.
