Popular and technically relatively easy ski tour for times with little snow, where you certainly will not be alone.

Snow guns and north-facing slopes guarantee that most parts of the tour remain snow-covered.

Some steeper sections can be a bit more challenging when icy.

The tour can be easily shortened. You can turn off in the upper part of the ski route Standard-Tonihütte to the Drehmöser mountain hut (only 600 m ascent in total) or climb a little further to Kreuzalm (860 m ascent in total).

There are many pistes in the Garmisch-Classic ski area, that means that this description is just one of many possible ascent options.

Sicherheitshinweise

-> Take the warning signs seriously! Piste preparation with cable winches can be life-threatening for ski tourers. Heavy snow groomers are attached to the cable winches with swivel arms. The steel ropes can suddenly swing out several meters (Underestimated danger to life - in German).

Even on piste ski tours, beepers, avalanche shovels and probes must always be with you. For your own safety and to save others.

A helmet is recommended when skiing.

Wegbeschreibung

-> Take the warning signs seriously! Piste preparation with cable winches can be life-threatening for ski tourers. Heavy snow groomers are attached to the cable winches with swivel arms. The steel ropes can suddenly swing out several meters (Underestimated danger to life - in German)

  • Ascent from the parking lot to Tonihütte (1 h, 375 m ascent)

From the parking lot of the Hausbergbahn (725 m) start walking under the snow lances on the piste. With very little snow the paved narrow road you will have to cross after a few minutes will not be snow-covered.

We climb up on the right side of the ski piste 'Hornabfahrt' (* if closed, see below), after about 30 min take the ski route Standard-Tonihütte on the right upwards and cross under the cable car Hausbergbahn.

If you look back to your right, you will have a nice view of the moutain Kramerspitz.

We continue to walk up relatively flat at first and later up a small steep slope to the Tonihütte/Rießerkopfhütte (1100 m). You can see the mountains Waxensteine peeking out behind the hut.

  • From Tonihütte to Trögelhütte (1 h, 335 m ascent)

At the Tonihütte turn left and continue along a flat piste with a impressive view on the Waxensteine. After about 15 minutes we come to piste junction with a sign. We follow the ski rout Standard Tonihütte to the left.

Further up the slope makes a steep right turn. After the short, steep climb it gets more comfortable and a magnificent view of the Alpspitze appears.

The terrain opens up and we see the lifts and the mountain huts at the Drehmöser terrain with restaurants on the left. Here you could shorten the tour and finish it at the Drehmöser hut.

But we keep to the right and continue straight ahead and relatively flat up to the Trögelhütte (1436 m). This mountain hut is located directly on the famous and very steep Kandahar descent.

  • From Trögelhütte to Kreuzjoch (45 min, 275 m ascent)

On the left of the Trögelhütte we cross the Kandahar slope through a pedestrian tunnel with a white carpet for skiers and a black mat for pedestrians. When the Kandahar is not icy and not closed because of snow grooming, you can cross aboveground.

After the tunnel continue towards Kreuzeck (sign) and after about 15 minutes turn left towards the Hexenkesselbahn chairlift. (On the right you would continue to the Kreuzeck.) We climb up under the chairlift to the Kreuzalm. The Kreuzalm (1600 m) is a restaurant and situated very photogenically in front of the Osterfelderkopf and the impressive Alpspitz and Zugspitz panorama. If you don't want to continue, this is a very nice spot to finish the tour.

But it is only 15 more minutes to the Kreuzjoch (1705 m), which is also the entrance to the Kandahar slope. It is an wonderfully quiet spot before the lift Kreuzjochbahn opens. The views are definitely worth the effort of the ascent.

To the north you see the Wank and Garmisch and as far as Munich. To the south you look over the steep abyss to the Alpspitze and the Wetterstein Mountains.

If you want to be photographed by the Kandahar Express webcam, simply stand between the hut and the entrance to the Kandahar descent. The webcam takes a photo every full 10 minutes ;-)

  • Downhill skiing (45 min)

The descent is the most fun part of a ski tour.  We first take our ascent route back to the Kreuzalm. (Experienced skiers could also take the very steep Kandahar slope).

At the Kreuzalm we immediately take a sharp right turn onto the Oberer Skiweg. It leads us to the ski tunnel (Trögltunnel) under the Kandahar slope. This tunnel is about 50 meters above the pedestrian tunnel we took when we climbed up.

We come to a large intersection of pistes and take the piste on the right. It leads to the flat terrain around the Drehmöser mountain huts with the large mountain restaurant Garmischer Haus, the rustic Drehmöser hut and the modern Kreuzwankl lift.

If you want to have a little more fun, there is the Hausberg webcam, which takes a photo every full 10 minutes, too (stand between the Drehmöser hut and the lift).

We continue on the right of Kreuzwankl lift through a slope in a forest aisle and arrive at another piste intersection. Now we take the steep Horn descent on the left. If the slope is too icy, it can be quite unpleasant to ski. Alternatively, you can continue straight ahead on the somewhat easier Kochelberg slope and you will also arrive at the Hausberg parking lot.

--

(*If the Horn slope is closed due to piste preparation, you can switch to the Kochelberg slppe. To do this, turn left at the warning sign and walk to the forest. There, go up via the Kochelberg slope to the Drehmöser hut. At the Drehmöser hut take the ski slope on the right to the Trögelhütte. To continue see description above)

Please note the regulations for ski touring on ski slopes in Bavaria (in German) and in particular the local regulations for the Garmisch-Classic ski area.
