Head through the heart of the “Zona Volcanica” region of La Garrotxa today, passing several of the regions dormant volcanoes which now lie cloaked in thick woodland. This fascinating area is home to over 40 ancient volcanoes and  lava flows and makes for a fascinating walk. Climb to the top of Santa Margarida volcano for views over the crater and the chapel built right in the centre of it.

Continue along the flanks of Volcano Croscat before entering the Fageda d’en Jorda, a beech forest growing on the ancient lava flow from the Croscat volcano. Pass fields with grazing cattle and peaceful farmsteads before arriving in Olot, capital of  La Garrotxa.

The crater of Santa Margarida volcano is a great spot to enjoy picnic on a nice day on today's walk. You can pick up fresh food and snacks from the bakery or small supermarket in Santa Pau. User

Points of Interest

Volcà de Santa Margarida
This extinct volcano is likely to be your first stop along today's walk. There's no mistaking your in a centre of a vlocano when you arrive at the rim of the crater. The hermitage in the meadow in the middle of the crater was built in the 1800's on the site of a previous building which was destory during the Catalan earthquake in 1428.

Croscat Volcano
Only a few kilometres from Santa Margarida is the Croscat volcano. This is the youngest and highest volcano on the Iberian peninsula. A large cross section of the volcano has been quarried for gravel up until the 1990's exposing the internal structure from top to bottom and offering a unique insight into the volcanic landscape of La Garrotxa. You can visit the permanent exhibit and museum here - slightly off the route.

Museu dels Volcans
The volcano museum in Parc Nou, Olot has exhibitions about the physical environment of the Garrotxa region with a focus on the region's volcanoes and interactive exhibits including an earthquake simulator. There is a small café on site and botanical gardens within the park.

Food & Drink

There are limited options to get food on the route. There are two restaurants just shy of halfway, if you plan to eat at either you should double check opening times before leaving:

Can Xel

Can Bastans

There is a small supermarket and a bakery in Santa Pau allowing you to pick up supplies before leaving to enjoy along the way - a popular spot being the crater at Santa Margarida.

Olot is a good sized town which has numerous cafés, bars and restaurants as well as a large supermarket.

Hiking boots or comfortable walking shoes are recommended for this walk. Walking poles will also be beneficial on the steeper sections. You should always be prepared for poor weather: bring a warmer layer and waterproof jacket as it is often noticeably cooler and windier in the mountains. Remember sun cream and take plenty of fluids on hot days.
