Hazards

Very few hazards along this route, but the water around the Strid area although pretty can be dangerous in spate conditions. The water in parts is very deep although slow moving and although inviting, it’s best to be aware if you have children.

The Urban Ranger Website cannot outline every single hazard on a walk – it’s up to you to be safe and competent, and to be able to read a map and use a compass. Plan your route properly with the latest advice from the AdventureSmart website

The starting point for this walk is Bolton Priory car park which is closest to the Priory Church and Ruins and Stepping Stones, and will cost you around £8 to park for the day.

“ Bolton Abbey is an estate in Wharfedale in North Yorkshire, which takes its name from the ruins of the 12th century Augustinian monastery, now generally known as Bolton Priory. It sits within the landscape of the Yorkshire Dale, adjacent to the village of Bolton Abbey."

Leave the car park and cross the road and look for a hole in the priory wall, once you enter the grounds you will realise you are entering the “jewel in the crown” of Yorkshire’s many landscapes, and the 30,000 acres of beautiful countryside boast over 80 miles of footpaths to walk. After taking in the ruins of the priory head for the bridge that crosses the river Wharfe or if the river is low you can try to cross using the stepping stones if you are brave enough.

Once on the right hand side of the river you can follow any of the paths up stream or you can cross over at the Cavendish Pavillion Cafe. Carry on up stream passing through the Strid ancient woodland until you get to the aqueduct. At this point make sure you are back on the right hand side of the river and head upstream to Barden Bridge. Once past the bridge there is a footpath that runs along the river all the way to Appletreewick keeping off the roads. At Stangs Lane you need to bare left almost back on yourself and cross the field back towards the river (Dales Way).

To get to the Craven Arms  (Which was our turning point) you need to come off the river at the Masons campsite and head up the lane which brings you right out at the pub. Appletreewick is a small village and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England; situated 12 miles (19 km) north-east of Skipton.

Starting life as a farm house in the 16th century, the Craven Arms slowly evolved into the public house it is today. Serving real ales and great food accompanied by gas lighting, real log fires and a great, friendly atmosphere. With a reputation for great food & real ale, our visit was not disappointing before heading back downstream to Bolton Abbey.
