"Madeira" - 105 km island crossing with everything the island has to offer!
Madeira is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, located about 600 km off the northwest coast of Africa and 1000 km southwest of Lisbon. It is a colourful miscellany for botanists, hiking enthusiasts or pleasure lovers. The rugged volcanic landscape is criss-crossed by levadas, old irrigation channels with footpaths that are now used as hiking trails. The high mountains, narrow valleys and steep Madeira coastline provide a beautiful backdrop for extended walks.

As always, I recommend my video on the tour:
First of all, you can stay in a tent or in a hut or hotel/apartment on this tour.
My tour starts on the east coast, at the small roundabout "Ponta de Sao Lourenco" (Baia dÀbra). From the airport about 15 minutes by taxi. I took a Bold, costing about 15 euros. I spent the first night in a tent at the viewpoint "Ponta do Bode". Alternatively, you can book a room in "Canical". On the second day, we went along the beautiful north coast to the viewpoint "Boca do Risco", further through the jungle along the levadas, through numerous tunnels, to "Ribeiro Frio". I would recommend a short stop in Portela, there is a restaurant there. The steak there was very good. In Ribeiro Frio, you again have the option of booking a room or staying in a tent. On day three, it was always uphill to the "Pico de Arieiro" and then further over the probably craziest path to the highest mountain in Madeira, the "Pico Ruivo". The sunrise and sunset at "Pico Ruivo" are an unbelievable sensation. Goosebumps! There is also a mountain hut and a small campsite there. Day four is another crazy up and down trail to Encumeada. A break in Encumeada is an excellent option. Then it's along the Laveda and through a tunnel about 1km long and over numerous steps to Seixal. Again, you can book a room there or spend the night in a tent on the way. On day five, the route goes uphill again to the mystical trees in "Fanal Pond". It is most beautiful there when the trees are shrouded in mist. Then it's downhill to Port Moniz. Those who still have strength can extend the tour to include the "Risco" waterfall. Even experienced hikers should plan at least 5 days for the tour. The hardest stage is certainly on day 4 from Pico Ruivo to Seixal. There are about 29 km and a few metres of altitude to be climbed. Of course, the stage can be split up without any problems. On the shortened days, for example, you can do smaller levada hikes and continue the tour. Enjoy the tour and I would be happy to receive your feedback and numerous photos.

General safety tips:All the safety rules of mountain sports also apply when hiking! Here is an overview in six points:
1. KNOWLEDGEABLE TOUR PLANNING: Pay attention to the weather forecast, check the terrain, check the equipment.2. FULL EQUIPMENT: An emergency kit with mobile phone, first aid kit, bivouac sack and ideally a headlamp is always with you when hiking in the mountains.
3. REALISTIC SELF-ECONSCIENCE: Behind the main causes of accidents is often, in truth, overestimation of one's own abilities. Therefore: Increase hikes slowly, get to know your body and your own abilities.
4. ORIENTATION: You should know how to use a map and altimeter - being able to read a map correctly is not a matter of course. Caution: A GPS device is a useful aid, but not a substitute for a map!
5. BEFORE YOU GO: Tell someone where you plan to be and when you plan to return.
6. IF ANYTHING HAPPENS: You should already have emergency numbers stored in your mobile phone: The Alpine emergency number is 140, the Euro emergency number is 112.
Disclaimer: Tour at your own risk! No liability whatsoever is accepted for any alpine hazards that may occur (weather, etc.).
