Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in your hotel before setting off for today’s hike. Take the Boé cable car to Piz Boé at 2,224m. This loop walk follows a balcony path as it steeply ascends the slopes of the Sella Massif and offers views of the Marmolada glacier, and also the Civetta and Pelmo peaks in the distance. Ascend a short section of easy Via Ferrata (no equipment required) just before reaching the Franz Kostner Rifugio. This traditional mountain hut is located at 2,500m and is a wonderful lunch stop. A gradual descent is a perfect way to walk off lunch, but you also have the option of taking chair lifts and cable cars all the way back into Corvara.

Franz Kostner Hut

Today you will be walking along narrow and exposed paths, so a head for heights and a sure foot is required. There are some easy Via Ferrata sections (metal wires, ladders, footholds bolted into the rock) to overcome. These don't require any specialist equipment and are similar to an easy scramble.

Watch the short term local weather forecasts. Avoid high altitude hiking when the weather is bad. There are plenty of trails in the valleys that allow you to reach a village quickly if bad weather sets in.

Start todays walk with a cable car ride to Piz Boé at 2,224m, You will notice a dramatic change in the scenery as you ride the cable up, gentle slopes covered with forests and alpine meadows yield to the steep scree fields and cliffs of the Sella Group, overlooked by the imposing peak of Piz Boè.

From the Boe Cable Car mountain station, hike along the trail nr 638 through the Vallon.  The Vallon is a stunning glacial valley surrounded by beautiful walls of Dolomia Cassiana, often climbed by mountaineers. Your section of the Via Ferrata starts here, where you will walk along the climbing routes and the fixed-rope trails as it steeply ascends the slopes of the Sella Massif, past the idyllic mountain lake of Lake Boé, situated at 2252 metres above sea level.

After the lake, you will reach a fork in the trail, bear left on to the trail nr. 636 and continue to follow the signs to the Franz Kostner Hutte as the trail loops up to the hut, and you will descend again along trail nr. 637 and down to 638 before reaching the mountain station of the Boe Cable Car again. Continue past it towards the Ütia Crëp de Munt Refugio along trail nr 639 as you make your descent into Corvara.

We recommend wearing hiking boots that are well broken-in, plus a rain jacket and waterproof trousers in wet weather, as well as taking sun cream and a hat on nicer days.

In your information pack, you’ll find a detailed list of all the required hiking gear, including some good hiking boots, appropriate clothing, a rain jacket and a backpack.
