A relaxed hike on the island of Austvågøya; from the outskirts of Kabelvåg follow a lovely trail through forest over relatively open ground with views of the surrounding peaks and many lakes.

Begin by driving to Osan from the Nyvagar Rorbuer (or Svinoya Rorbuer, depending on where you are staying) and taking the bus back to Kabelvåg from where you’ll leave the village outskirts to join a peaceful trail through the forest. The undulating path follows, giving excellent views onto the lakes below and the peaks surrounding the open wooded bay area.  Enjoy the change of scenery and terrain as you ascend a couple of smaller peaks before heading up Tjeldbergtinden to gain the best viewpoint over the entire bay. The descent from Tjedlbergtinden is steep, but you’ll soon be onto easy-going forest tracks before walking through the less scenic outskirts of Osan to return to your car.

Parking: To best enjoy the hike, and so you don’t feel rushed, we suggest driving to the end of the walk, and catching the bus from Osan beside the E10 heading towards Kabelvåg.  Drive north from Kabelvåg on the E10 and look out for the Esso petrol station on the left-hand side of the road as you enter Osan - use the lane in the middle of the road for turning off the E10 to the left so you can park in gravel car park behind the Esso Garage.

Bus Timetable and Information:  The bus stop is a concrete shelter next to a layby on the left-hand side of the E10 headingnorth to Svolvaer less than a two minute walk from the Esso Garage.

You can take either the 83-743 bus for Henningsvaer or the 18-741 bus for Leknes – both stop at Kabelvåg, just let the driver know where you’d like to get off (the stop after Vågan Church).

Purchase single tickets from Osan to Kabelvåg – you can pay by contactless card payment.

Buses run around hourly between 9am and noon, and then move to a more sporadic timetable until late afternoon/early evening so make sure to check the timetable here: https://177nordland.no/ac/travel-planner.  On Sundays the earliest bus isn’t until after 11am, but as this is a short walk you’ll still have plenty of time.

Make the most of this short scenic route by taking a picnic - there are a couple of benches dotted along the route but the best views are to be had from the broad ridge just beyond the summit of Tjeldbergtinden!

Sicherheitshinweise

A fairly relaxed hike with few hazards.  Take care on short sections where walking on roads without a walkway or pavement is required and give way to vehicles.  After or during rain the rocky path with tree roots can be slippery so take care and consider using walking poles to help take some pressure off you knees on the steep descent from Tjedbergtinden peak.

Bus Timetable and Information

The bus stop is a concrete shelter next to a layby on the left-hand side of the E10 headingnorth to Svolvaer less than a two minute walk from the Esso Garage.

You can take either the 83-743 bus for Henningsvaer or the 18-741 bus for Leknes – both stop at Kabelvåg, just let the driver know where you’d like to get off (the stop after Vågan Church).

Kabelvåg

The village is located on the Lofoten island of Austvågøya and is just a 15 minute drive from Svolvær.  The village has a couple of restaurants, a café, bakery (where you can sit in with a coffee to enjoy one of their delicious pastries), and a few small shops along with a supermarket.  Nearby you’ll also find the -

Gallery Espolin (showcasing the work of the regions proclaimed Kaare Espolin Johnson): https://www.museumnord.no/en/gallery-espolin/

Vågan Church

This eye-catching church is situated on the coast above a small inlet on the left-hand side of the E10 as you ride towards Kabelvåg on the bus.  The current church on was designed by Carl Julius Bergstrøm and construction finished in 1898, but previously there have been 4 or 5 churches on the same site.  It has been the site of a church since the 12th century, and thus is the place of Lofoten’s first church, which was built under the reign of King Øystein Magnusson (c. 1088– 1123). It’s possible to visit the church during opening times for a small entrance fee – you can check their website for the most up-to-date opening times.

Food & Drink

There is nowhere to stop en route for refreshments, so we recommend bringing a packed lunch – Tjeldbergtinden peak is a great picnic spot – with plenty of food and water (at least 1.5 litres). There is a supermarket in Osan just across the road from the Esso garage where you can pick up provisions.  Alternatively, there’s local bakery in Kabelvåg (closed Sundays), along with a couple of restaurants and a small supermarket in the town centre.

Wegbeschreibung

0.00 km – Get off at the bus stop after Vågan Kirke (church) the bus stop is just before the road signpost for “Sentrum”.  Once off the bus, safely cross the road and TURN RIGHT to walk along the pedestrian and cycleway on the other side.  Continue for 400m with the E10 on your right.

0.40 km – Cross the road dissecting the pedestrian and cycleway then TURN RIGHT to go through the underpass.  At the cross roads on the other side continue STRAIGHT ON following the pedestrian and cycleway into the residential area.

0.85 km – At the crossroads continue STRAIGHT ON to begin ascending.

1.10 km – After walking to the end of the road with a large building behind you to the right continue STRAIGHT ON the muddy track into the trees passing the KS Ski Lofoten sign on your right.

In 100m BEAR LEFT where the track splits.

1.30 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON at crossroads of tracks.

1.40 km – Look out for a path going off to the right – there is exposed rock at its base where it joins the track – and TURN RIGHT off the track onto this narrow path to ascend between the trees.

1.80 km – At the top of Presthagda peak (100m), enjoy the great views before continuing STRAIGHT ON the narrow path.

2.70 km – At the top of the next peak – Stor-Andershaugen (146m) – continue STRAIGHT ON the path to descend steeply through the trees.  Take care and look out for slippery tree roots and rocks on the descent.

3.00 km – Just after passing a cabin on your right in the trees come to a crossroads of tracks and continue STRAIGHT ON

3.30 km – At a T-junction with a track cross the track and continue STRAIGHT ON to the rocky narrow path in the trees ahead.

In 100 m TURN LEFT to follow a narrow rocky path ascending through the trees.  Stay on this path all the way to the top of Tjeldbergtinden.

4.20 km – Reach the summit of Tjeldbergtinden (369m) and spend some time here enjoying the views and perhaps making an entry in the guestbook attached to the tripod.

You can descend from the summit in a couple of ways the trickiest is by continuing straight on over the summit and descending a stepped rocky chimney with fishing rope for support. Our GPS track follows the easiest route down; facing the tripod the way you came up TURN RIGHT then follow the path left around the craggy summit.

4.50 km – Join another path from the left and continue STRAIGHT ON along the ridge.

In 100m TURN LEFT off the ridgeline and follow the path to begin descending.

4.70 km – At the small cairn TURN RIGHT off the path to continue descending.  Please take care as you descend through the trees – the path is steep in places and the tree roots and rocks can be slippery especially when wet.

5.30 km – BEAR LEFT on the path to reach a T-junction with a track.  TURN LEFT onto the wide gravel track and continue descending.

6.30 km – The track comes to the road on a bend TURN LEFT onto the road and walk along it on the outskirts of Osan.

6.40 km – At a T-junction TURN RIGHT and walk along the road – take care of traffic – back towards where you left your car.

6.60 km – The route finishes with the Esso petrol station on your right-hand side where there’s a gravel area for parking cars.

Ausrüstung

This is an easy-going hike so you shouldn't need to pack your bag full if the weather is good.  However, remember the weather here can change in an instant so make sure to bring a small backpack with raingear and a warm layer.  A camera, water (at least 1.5 litres), picnic, and stiff-soled walking shoes or boots are also essential.  You may also find walking poles useful for the steep descent from Tjeldbergtinden.

Please see your information pack for a full list of recommended kit.
