An interesting cycle round Rutland Water, this route does the shortened 15.25 mile route. It can be extended to over 21 miles by taking in the Hambleton peninsular. The extra bit is described in my walking route of that area. Be aware that it can get busy on a sunny Sunday, like most tourist spots.
Strecke 24,6 km
Obviously, as a circular ride, this route can be done from any one of the car parks dotted along the route and in either direction. However, there is method in my choosing the start point of Whitwell. After a couple of miles the route follows the road towards Oakham. My wife and I find this easier to use the natural downhill contour. Also, as the ride progresses there are more chances for a refreshment break later on. Get the stretch with less watering holes done while the legs are fresh. The prevailing wind is usually SW and again this helps on the Edith Weston stretch and over the dam. So with that in mind, park at the Whitwell car park on the North Shore and go anti-clockwise. This 15.25 mile route is well marked and easy to follow. The areas near the car parks need to be taken carefully as the ride never has dedicated bike and pedestrian paths.
