Bakewell to Chee Dale on the old disused railway track. At just over 18.5 miles, this is a very easy route to follow, made more interesting by the 6 tunnels and many viaducts. Some being quite high above the river.

The Bakewell to Chee Dale, Monsal Trail uses the old disused railway. The tunnels were opened in 2012 and it now makes a pleasent day ride for riders of all skill levels, even beginners. The choice of starting point takes into account the fact that the gradient is slghtly uphill from Bakewell and downhill all the way back. Always a good idea in my book. I think the spikes on the gradient profile are where the route goes through a tunnel and GPS has difficulty. There are no sudden inclines on the old track as you might guess on an old railway. The surface is easy and there are facilities at the start and along the way. Three of the tunnels are quite long and curve but have been lit all the way along. So no problem but bike lights (although not required) help the pedestrians see you coming. This is the first tunnel. Even on a warm day it might be worth noting that the longer tunnels remain quite cool. My route veers off at the end (Bakewell Station) to go down the road into the town. I never visit Bakewell with trying out the local treats.
