I was woken by my alarm at 06.00, washed and dressed before packing my rucksack and going down to breakfast at 06.30.    I was away at 06.50 and despite the 580 metre climb reached the Hourquette d’Ossoue (2734m) in some 20 minutes less than suggested by the guide book even with stopping to put my Yaktrax on and off when crossing several sections of snow.  I stopped at the col for 10 minutes before descending relatively quickly despite more sections of snow – in fact it was probably quicker to walk on snow than on loose scree and rock especially when wearing Yaktrax.

I met a large flock of sheep on the track below the Pont de Neige (2092m).  On reaching the stream at the head of the Valley d’Ossoue without a bridge – it had collapsed, I took the path to the south of the river and crossed the stream where it was shallower at the head of the lake.  I reached the Barrage d’Ossoue (1834m) at about 11.00 where I decided to follow Tobi’s advice and walk into Gavarnie on the road reducing the walking time by around 80 minutes.  In fact it took me only two hours including at least one stop on the way down.  I arrived at the Tourist Office in Gavarnie to find Tobi and Nina waiting for me with a bottle of beer having decided to have another rest day.  I enquired at the Tourist office about a suitable hotel and they advised that the cheapest with any single rooms left was the Hotel Maboré one of the dating back to 1895.  I went to the hotel to check in whilst Tobi and Nina looked after my rucksack and then returned to have a beer and some lunch of jambon and salad at the bar/restaurant opposite the tourist office. Tobi joined me for a beer whilst Nina went back to their hotel for a rest.  Tobi then showed me the shops and the bank where I withdrew some cash.  Back to the hotel to shower, shave and wash some clothes which I hung in the hotel boiler room.  Both the Tourist Office and hotel had WiFi so I was able to check on emails etc.

I then went out shopping and bought some sunglasses, electrolyte powder, bread, cheese, chocolate and a banana.  I walked up to the end of Gavarnie to see the famous Cirque – too many tourists walking back from the one hour walk at the base of the Cirque which could also be done on a mule or horse.  I stopped for a beer on the way back to my hotel and wrote up my diary and then to the hotel to phone home and try and book a room at Héas for the following night.  I was successful phoning home but couldn’t get through to the refuge/auberge at Héas.  We later found out from the Tourist Office that it had closed and another refuge was full and we eventually booked into the auberge at Maillet which would mean a detour and a slightly longer walk to Parzan.  I joined Tobi and Nina for dinner at the bar/restaurant opposite the Tourist office.  Liver pate with prune jam followed by lamb chops, potatoes and a green salad which was quite good but Tobi and Nina’s steaks were overcooked.  We shared a bottle of red wine.  Back to my hotel to rescue my drying before they locked the door, it wasn’t dry and I had to dry one pair of socks for tomorrow with the hairdryer.

Total cost of lunch, dinner, bed and breakfast including drinks was €131.
