I awoke to my alarm at 05.45, washed, packed and ate a banana and some bread before setting off at 06.22.  Most hotels would have left out some breakfast for walkers leaving early but they weren’t particularly friendly having refused to do any washing for me and then charged me more than we had agreed.  I stopped to get some more cash when passing the bank on the way out of Gavarnie.  I went past the campsite (where I was told that they had a washing machine) and then a long climb firstly very steep gradually easing before reaching the Refuge des Espuguettes (2027m) at around 09.00.  I stopped for a café au lait and an iced tea and chatted to Tobi and Nina who were still at the refuge having overtaken me on the way up.  I left the refuge at about 09.30 some ten minutes after Tobi and Nina and climbed slowly but easily to the Hourquette d’Alans (2430m) which I reached at about 11.00.  Altogether a climb of some 900 metres from Gavarnie of which the first section to the refuge was much the harder.  I stopped briefly before beginning the descent into the valley Estaubé below.  Quite steep to begin with but some easy traversing on zigzags and I was soon walking beside the fiver flowing into the Lac des Gloriettes (1668m). 

I met Tobi and Nina resting beside the river at about 12.50 so I stopped and joined them and had my lunch of bread, cheese (Tomme de Chevré) and chocolate.  Attended to what I thought might be a blister forming under my left foot and put some Arnica gel on the two small toes of my right foot which were slightly swollen.  We discussed the best route to Maillet without having to walk to Héas and then climb up to Maillet.  There seemed to be a path on the map and in the end we found the path although it had almost disappeared by the time we reached Maillet.  I set off about 10 minutes after Tobi and Nina and we were soon following cairns which appeared to go in the right direction and after a while there was a sign to Maillet so we continued up an old track to about 2000 metres.  At this point I met Tobi and Nina deciding whether to continue on the track or turn right on a kind of path.  They continued on the track and I turned right.  They arrived at the Auberge de Maillet (1800m) about 10 minutes before me as my path ended on top of a cliff and I had to negotiate my way round it before arriving at the auberge at 15.18 shortly after hearing the first thunder.

Tobi and Nina were waiting with a large beer for me but it had started to rain before we finished our beers although it didn’t last very long  The sun soon came out again and I was able to hang up my washing from Gavarnie to dry.  I had another beer with Tobi whilst sitting in the sun but it started raining again so I hung my washing up in the dormitory and went and had a very good shower, shaved and washed my socks.  I sat outside again whilst writing up my diary although the sun had by now gone behind the cloud and the mist started dropping around us.  Thunder continued in the mountains.  We sat down to an excellent dinner at 19.30 of soup (3 bowls), spaghetti bolognese followed by custard tart all with ½ litre of wine and then an espresso coffee. 

I went to bed at around 21.00 and read for a while.  I slept very well despite the coffee and didn’t wake up until 06.50.  Total cost of dinner, bread and breakfast including drinks was €63.
