A scenic 30 minute ferry ride from Vannes, Île d'Arz is the second largest island in the Gulf of Morbihan after the Île-aux-Moines. Île d'Arz is quite different to its bigger neighbour, being almost completely flat for one! It is also different in character; more peaceful, rugged and wild. First inhabited by sailor's and fisherman which earned the island the nickname 'Captain's Island', the island has stayed close to its roots with the main activity beside walking and cycling being sailing lessons at the Glénans sailing school.

Your wallk today follows the sentier côtier (Coastal Path) around the entire island and is very easy considering how flat it is (the highest point on the island is a dizzying 13m!). It can also be shortened in several places and you can easily head inland to the charming island centre to relax with a refreshing breton cidre or a delicious crepe. Be sure not to miss the Moulin de Berno, a tidal sea mill lovingly restored by the locals.

Sicherheitshinweise

Check weather forecasts before heading out and take care when close to the waterline if bad weather closes in.

This route follows a coastal path in it's entirety so there's no worry about road traffic. If you do happen to venture into town via one of the roads then take the usual precautions and remember when there isnt a pavement to walk on the left so you're facing any oncoming vehicles.

Check your ferry time table:

Tickets to Île d’Arz have to bought at the ferry port, as they do not accept payments in advance. A return ticket costs 10.40 € per person, the time table can be found here: https://www.vedettes-du-golfe.fr/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/arz_2019__007735500_1421_24122018.png

Food & Drink

There is a bar/restaurant next to the ferry port but once en route there is nowhere else to get food or refreshments, unless you head inland to one of the villages. If you prefer to picnic then get supplies before leaving Vannes.

Reaching Vannes Port

Although the Vannes Harbour waters almost reach the gates to the old town in central Vannes the ferries dont actually depart from here as they are too large. Follow the right bank of the harbour for around 15 minutes and you will eventually see the ferry departure point and ticket office directly ahead of you, just beyond the rotating road bridge.

If walking directly from your hotel the walk will take around 35 to 40 minutes and add on just over 3km in each direction to your days walk. If you would prefer to take a taxi then the hotel reception can arrange this for you.

Points of interest

Berno Mill

This mill was built under the religious community Saint Gildas de Rhuys who exerted its power in the southern part of the main island. It is a tide mill and was built around the 13th century. There is no certainty to the exact date which it was built, but the oldest document found concerning the mill was dating 1575. The mill kept functioning until 1910. Due to the lack of maintenance, the mill quickly degraded and became a ruin. A group of volunteers restored it to it's original state back in 2000.

Ausrüstung

A pair of walking shoes/trainers are enough for this route as it's very easy ground. Pack a water/windproof as the ferry crossings and winds can get a little chilly in the early season.

Fragen & Antworten

Frage von Larry Klein · 20.06.2022 · Community
What company operates the ferries from Vannes to l'Ile d'Arz? Bateux-bus website is very confusing, redirecting me to Bréhat ferries with no mention of L'Ile d'Arz. Second, I see ferries only at 10:10 or 14:20 from Vannes to Arz. Is there no ferry at mid-day?
