Location details
This new National Park stretches for 670km2, from Winchester to Eastbourne, providing plenty of big rolling hills to explore. The chalky terrain is fast and furious when dry and drains well, but when saturated it can become incredibly slippery and/or sticky.

Start/finish
East Meon car park (grid ref SU 677/222, postcode GU32 1PF).

Getting there
East Meon is between West Meon on the A32 and Petersfield on the A3. Either follow the road east along the valley from West Meon, or exit the A3 at Petersfield and head for Langrish on the A272, then follow signs for East Meon. The car park is near the village hall.

Accommodation/facilities
Ye Olde George Inn in East Meon (01730 823481, www.yeoldegeorgeinn.net) offers accommodation as well as food. There’s a village shop in East Meon and The Beech Cafe near Coombe Wood on the route, also has tepees and yurts (www.sustainability-centre.org). For spares and repairs, try Cycleworks bike shop in Petersfield (http://cycleworks.co.uk, 01730 263370).

Go left out of the car park, then left at the crossroads (signposted to West Meon). Continue to a grass triangle on a right-hand bend, then turn left on the Halnaker Lane byway. Follow this along the edge of Hen Wood, keeping ahead/slightly left to join the South Downs Way (SDW).

Cross the road by some houses and follow the SDW uphill between a line of trees. Head across the top of Salt Hill to a road, and turn left. (There’s a cafe to the right here.) Before the road descends, bear right across it to join the SDW, which runs parallel with it, downhill.

Turn right on the road at the bottom, keeping to the left of the grass triangle. At the T-junction go straight ahead, off-road, still following the SDW. When you meet a road turn left on it, continuing along the SDW. Bear right at the fork and then bear left, off the tarmac and off the SDW, by an (open) barrier across the road.

Join the singletrack by the barrier and ‘no cars’ sign. Keep right at a fork in the trail and descend into the trees. When you reach a three-way road junction, turn left. Go right at the next junction, then left on a wide gravel byway.

Continue ahead (passing a farm on your right) and go straight over a wide, open junction of multiple tracks, following the treeline. Join a track by a house on the right and keep ahead/right. Turn right on the road and follow it into Frogmore.

Bear right past the thatched houses, by the stream, down to the main road. Turn right along the High Street, then keep ahead/left as it bears right by Ye Olde George Inn. Bear right at the fork and follow the signs back to the car park.

This route was a good circuit from and through East Meon along the South Downs. We were looking for a little more challenge though and took a different route off Butser's Hill
