With an elevation gain of nearly 2,000 m, and a route that took us nearly 11 hours to complete, getting to the top and back down in one day proved pretty demanding. Many will choose to split up the journey by overnighting in the Edmund-Graf-Hütte and tackling the summit climb the following morning.  Whichever option you take, the journey, sense of achievement, and fantastic views from the top of the Hoher Riffler are worth the effort.  We visited in late October and had to contend with quite a bit of snow. I'm sure that the trip is much easier during the warmer summer months!

Autorentipp

  • Start early, especially if going later in the year.
  • Be on the lookout for ibex chilling in the sun.
  • Download the route in advance in order to keep track of where you are. There are coloured markers on the rocks, but they might be obscured in snowy conditions.

Sicherheitshinweise

  • The final third of the ascent involves a lot of loose rock and a substantial talus field to work your way through, so mind your ankles.
  • Be wary of rockfalls, especially if the snow is melting.

Ziel

The Hoher Riffler's North Summit

Wegbeschreibung

  • From the Malfontal car park, continue along the Malfonbach (river) for 3.6 km until you reach the Malfonalm (hut).
  • You will turn away from the river after another 1.2km to start ascending a gulley. Turn back if you go past the small building on the left. The track becomes quite fractured at this point, but rest assured that you will reach the Edmund-Graf-Hütte after about 2 km.
  • Go to the back of the building and follow the signage in the direction of the Hoher Riffler. After crossing an area of meandering grass and rock for about 1 km you will reach a ridge. Cross over this and turn right onto the talus field.
  • Aiming for the gap at the top, continue for 870 m after which you will find yourself on an open and relatively flat section between several peaks. Looking North, the Kleiner Riffler will be to your left, the Hoher Riffler to your front-right, and the jagged peak of the Blankahorn to your immediate right. The drop to the Pettneuer Ferner (glacier) is directly in front of you.
  • You will be able to see the summit cross of the Hoher Riffler, around 400m from you. From here you simply follow the slope up until you reach the North Summit.
  • Please note that the cross is actually located on the South Summit. Crossing the gap between both summits should only be undertaken by equipped climbers.
  • Return to the car park using the same route.

We left our car at the Parklplatz Malfontal, which were delighted to discover is free- or was when we went.

Ausrüstung

As we knew we'd encounter snow, we took crampons and an ice axe and helmet each- we were grateful for the extra security.
