Relatively small at only 5km long and 2.5km wide, Ramsvik island is a lovely place to spend the day and an interesting contrast from the hustle and bustle of Smögen. Follow a loop walk around the peninsula, enjoying the diverse geology, flora and birdlife as you go.

Take the bus to Ramsvikvagen (20 minutes), then follow the road until the impressive swing bridge over the Sote-Kanal. On the opposite side of the canal another short road walking section soon finishes as you head across to the coast and follow the dramatic moonscape of the west coast. A woodland trail before reaching Ramsvik town provides quite a contrast to the previous 8km of walking. Take some time out in Ramsvik to enjoy lunch or a drink next to its sandy beach before some boat spotting as you follow the road back alongside the Soten-Kanal to Ramskivagen bus stop.

Alternatively, spend the day at leisure in Smögen. The famous ‘Smögenbryggan’ a 600m-long boardwalk along the harbour, is the perfect place to while away the day. Take one of the popular 'Seafood Safaris’ ; help the local fisherman catch mussels, lobsters, crayfish, langoustines and enjoy a them onboard for lunch—it doesn’t get much fresher than that! Seafood safaris are justifiably popular so should be booked well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Even if the Soten-Kanal isn't busy with boat traffic when you arrive it's worth waiting around to watch the swing bridge in action as a tall boat passes through.

At the beginning of the route you need to cross a busy main road so take good care here. Although the roads on Ramsvik are narrow with slow moving traffic do as with all road walking, stay on the left so as to face any oncoming vehicles and try to make yourself as visible as possible.

When crossing the rocks on the west coast take good care during or after rainfall as the rocks may be extremely slippery.

Food and Drink

Smogen has a small selection of cafes/delis if you would like to take a packed lunch with you for today's walk, otherwise there is a cafe in Ramsvik town that has a good selection of dishes.

Points of interest

Originally attached to the Sotenaset Peninsula Ramsvik was seperated from the mainland when the Soten-Kanal was blasted and dug out in the 1930s. The project went ahead to provide sea goers a safe passage avoiding the infamous Sotefjord which has claimed many boats in the past.

Opened in 1935 by Prince Gustaf Adolf the canal now sees approximately 50,000 passing through it every year.

Buchtipps für die Region

A pair of sturdy walking trainers will be enough for this route if you dont want to wear full hiking boots. Along with the rest of your usual gear for a day outdoors remember to pack a wind/waterproof and an extra layer. The west coast is very exposed to any weather rolling in from the sea on this walk and there is little to no shelter.

On a hot day be sure to pack your swim suit and suncream!
