A great little ride, but one that still packs a reasonable punch. Good moorland trails lead onto some superb technical singletrack before finishing on the UK’s first crowd-funded mountain bike trail.

Distance: 16km (9.9 miles).
Total climb: 500m (1,640ft).
Time: 1-2hrs.

Location details
Burbage Moor is on the eastern edge of the Peak District, just outside Sheffield, making its rugged and wild terrain easy to access. There are a number of very good trails in the area, and Ride Sheffield are helping to create more.

Start/finish
Ringinglow car park, off Houndkirk Road (grid ref SK290/834, postcode S11 7TS).

Getting there
The ride starts from Ringinglow, south-west of Sheffield. Turn up Houndkirk Road, opposite the Norfolk Arms. Just up the road, turn right when the road bears left, to the car park.

Maps and useful books
Ordnance Survey Landranger 110: Sheffield & Huddersfield.

Accommodation/facilities
The Norfolk Arms has good pub grub and good value accommodation (www.norfolkarms.com, 0114 230 2197). There are lots of places to eat and sleep in Sheffield, as well as a wide choice of bike shops. For local trail information see www.ridesheffield.org.uk.

Head up the hill on the track. Go straight over the track crossing, onto the moors. Continue across the moors to a road, and go left on it. Just past a road on the right, turn right into a small car park. Join the permissive bridleway that heads through a gap in the wall on the left. Follow this into the trees, parallel to the road.

After 0.5km go through a gate and turn right on a bridleway. Follow this downhill to some fords. After a bridleway joins from the left, turn right to drop down to a ford. Then climb, staying on this main track. Exit the trees and climb to the right, back up to the small car park by the road.

Turn right, back along the permissive bridleway, but this time ignore the bridleway on the right after the gate and go through another gate instead. Turn right at the T-junction, downhill. Keep ahead/left to join Shorts Lane, past the riding school, and head uphill on the tarmac.

At the crossroads (driveway ahead only) turn left, uphill, back to the main road. Turn right on the road. After 400m turn left on Sheephill Road. After another 500m turn left on a byway at a small layby, through a gate, uphill.

Keep straight ahead at the track crossing (from step 1) to climb a bit more, with a plantation on your right. Take the second forest track on the right, opposite a singletrack trail uphill to Ox Stones, and join the new Lady Canning’s manmade trail on the left. At the bottom turn left on the forest track, back to the car park.
