Wainwright described the Hall's Fell Ridge route up Blencathra as the best way up any mountain in the Lake District for active walkers or scramblers. It's strenuous and a little scary if you're not great with heights, but the views at the top are amazing!

This route starts from a layby next to Scales on the main Keswick bypass. After getting off the main road, you head west, crossing two streams (the first of which has a bit of a rock step to get you used to the scrambling you'll be doing later!), and passing Doddick Fell, which is another very good route up (or down).

Finally, after about a mile, you start climbing Hall's Fell. After the first grassy section, you start to encouter rock! There are good opportunities for scrambing right from the start of this section, although for the majority of the way up there is a path (first on the right, then on the left) which avoids the very top of the ridge. Toward the top, though, there is no alternative but to get into scrambling gear. The climb itself isn't too scary, although those (like me!) without much of a head for heights might have to take it in easy stages and get themselves used to the drops to the left and right, and to the views which quickly open up to the south.

Eventually you get to the top, and the top of the ridge is also the top of Blencathra itself - a great viewpoint over the whole northern half of the Lake District. After a potter around the top (perhaps going to look at the crazy people going over Sharp Edge to the north...), the easy route down is via Scales Fell to the easy. This is initially pretty flat, but gets steep at times, and can get a little muddy. It drops you down to a quiet lane which takes you back almost to the starting point on the main road.
