There is a spell of easy walking today followed by gradual and gentle inclines. The path then climbs steeply to Chanctonbury Ring, an ancient and magical circle of Beech trees. The path descends slowly around the southern edges of the Steyning Bowl valley and into Botolphs. Continue to the town of Upper Beeding, tonight's overnight stop. If you are staying in Steyning tonight instead, please follow the track for Amberley to Steyning. If you are unsure if you are staying in Steyning or Upper Beeding please consult your accommodation details.

Upper Beeding is a pleasant village with a population of about 4,000. It is about 2km north off the SDW trail. It is very close to Bramber and Steyning, and the three are often considered to make up one large town/residential area. There is a newsagent, pharmacy and a handful of eating places and pubs in Upper Beeding. If time allows, you may wish to cross the river to visit Bramber Castle (see points of interest for more information).

At approx. 10 km you will come to the very busy A24 road. Take extreme care when crossing as the traffic is fast.

The South Downs Way occassionally crosses busy roads, take care when crossing!

If you wish to carry a hardcopy map, we would recommend buying the South Downs Way map published by Harvey's Maps. Alternatively, you may wish to print the daily maps directly from our app.

If you wish to bring a guidebook, we would recommend Trailblazer's South Downs Way by Jim Manthorpe & Daniel McCrohan.

Food & Drink

Stock up on supplies in Amberley, or ask your accommodation upon check-in if they offer packed lunches. Although you will be walking through towns and villages, café opening hours are not always guaranteed, therefore we recommend taking enough food and drink to see you through until your next overnight location.

Upper Beeding

*** To help you follow the route with confidence we provide these route notes to help you. The South Downs Way is well waymarked, but we strongly suggest that you follow the GPS tracks in the Macs Adventure smartphone app to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and problem-free day.  The daily maps can also be printed from the web version of the app should you wish to take paper copies with you. ***

Leave Amberley the way you entered yesterday, however continue straight ahead (south) to rejoin the trail. After approx 800m bear left to continue on the trail in direction Steyning/Upper Beeding.

The next stretch, approx. 8 km, is an easy- going walk along a high crest of the South Downs Way. On a clear day you can enjoy views over the coast.

At approx. 10 km you will come to the very busy A24 road. Take extreme care when crossing as the traffic can be fast. On the other side, follow the track as it heads north before swinging to the right and passes a parking place. The busy road is quickly left behind as the trail continues along quiet country lanes.

At approx. 10.5km, there is a detour route to your left which takes in the local chalk pits, and rejoins the path further down. Feel free to take this slightly more direct route (bearing in mind it is steep in places), or continue on the trail which heads south before  taking a sharp left turn to head north again.

At approx. 12.3 km, Chanctobury Ring can be found to the left of the path. Being a great viewpoint, you may consider a short detour to the summit. See the interactive Points of Interest on the digital map for more information about it.

From here the trail heads south-east. At approx. 16km, just after passing a trig point, and just before reaching a small memorial to a local farmer (which will be in front of you, to the right), there is a fork in the path. Continue straight ahead, continuing south. After about 1km, continue on the SDW as it turns left and follows the edge of a field.

At about 20 km, come to the River Adur, cross it and then turn left, leaving the SDW behind and head north on the trail that hugs the river. After about 1 km, pass under the A283. Continue on the riverside path. At approx 22 km, turn right to join Dawn Crescent. Follow Dawn Crescent into the town centre. Please check your individual accommodation details for information about where you are staying in Upper Beeding tonight.

Such is the way of British hiking, that you need to be prepared for all seasons and weathers; sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required, as is plenty of sun-cream and a healthy respect for the sun.

Walking poles may be helpful on some of the ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.
