A famous stretch of road in Norway and one of the most beautiful drives in the world, the Atlantic Ocean Road (“Atlanterhavsvegen”) brings you in close contact with the Atlantic Ocean. Norwegian Scenic Route Atlanterhavsvegen is 36 kilometers long and travels between the seaside villages of Kårvåg and Bud on the exposed western coast. A drive along this route pairs well with the Geiranger-Trollstigen scenic route to the south.
Characterized by seven bridges bouncing between a group of islets off the coast, the route is somewhat of an engineering marvel. But at the same time nature is the focus, and the road grants you the opportunity to easily access and explore this remote coastline. Mother nature is on show, so take every chance to stop, explore, and enjoy the atmosphere along the route.
The scenic route is suited to cycling, but be prepared for heavy traffic and winds.
Tips • At 36 kilometers long–and the bridge section about 8 kilometers long–some travelers report feeling that a trip along the route is over quite quickly. While driving over the islands and bridges is thrilling, remember that most of the experience here is had outside of the car. • With some stunningly located hotels and a variety of other accommodation options, consider spending a night along the route. Regardless of the weather, a night on the edge of the ocean will be a memorable one. • There’s a café on Eldhusøya Island, together with the Svevestien pathway. • For a good lunch, consider the well-regarded Bjartmars Favorittkro in Kårvåg where seafood and local delicacies are a feature. • The route is situated between the larger centers of Kristiansund and Molde. If you drive through Kristiansund, consider a trip to the remote Grip archipelago. The former fishing village is no longer inhabited, but locals use the former houses as cabins in the summertime. Located 14 kilometers northwest of Kristiansund, scheduled boat services run in summer.
