Geilo and Hol Municipality are among the best areas in Norway for cross-country skiing, and have more than 500 kilometers of groomed trails, both in the valleys and on the mountain plateaus.
The beautiful cross-country trails are free to use and there is a wide range of levels on the trails - everything from short, flat areas for beginners, to more challenging trails along the mountain tops.
In the valley of Geilo there is an illuminated area and the very popular tour around the lake. Up to the mountains there are more and longer tracks some of them to serving cabins. Makes sure to check out if they are open on the particular Facebook side of the cabin.
The season starts normally by the end of November and lasts until May. The most eager cross-country skiers can ski in the higher mountain areas until June. The days are shorter in Desember and January, perfect days are in February and March, in April the sun starts to melt the snow during the day and the tracks turn in to icy parts during the nights. Fro February you always need suncreme and sunglasses also on cloudy days.
Use the ski bus to come from one side to the other side of the Geilo valley and buy a one way ticket from the chair lift for an easy start. You will need to buy a one-way ticket for the chair lift in the skireception from Vestlia or Slaatta.
During Easter there is a possibiliy to take a spesial Easter bus to the Hardangervidda - inform yourselv on the Facebook page of Visit Geilo if and when it runs.
